Sidney Poitier : “I Was Too Black for The View”

Sidney Poitier was the first black actor to win an Academy Award for his staggeringly amazing work in Hollywood.  His career only took off after that, with a variety of memorable roles.

“It was pretty great, getting all of those movies back in those days,” Poitier said with a smile.  “They usually didn’t cast black actors so much.  Except for me, really”.

The actor, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 94, says, however, that his upcoming appearance on daytime talk’s The View was abruptly cancelled by management by what they termed “A scheduling conflict”.

“It was a negro conflict really, is what it was,” Poitier told Joe Barron, a media consultant.  “They were afraid that I was way too black for their ratings and liberal audience.”

Anonymous sources on the set of the program seemed to affirm his supposition.  One of them, 35-year old “Enchilada” Lawrence Tate from Queefaville, Ohio, told us that the actor was too “intimidating”.

“The real reasoning is that, you know, he’s dead and all.  I mean, what’s he gonna talk about?  Nothing?  We weren’t looking to have a ‘Weekend at Sydney’s’ on the air.  Has nothing to do with color, really.”

“Oh, it has everything to do with color,” countered the corpse.  “I heard them tell my manager that ‘Whoopi as the token darkie was more than enough’.  Truth.”

But Tate disagreed again.

“Well, I’d respond that he didn’t hear anything.  Because he’s dead.”
